Burger King Korea Turns the Whopper Into an Eight-Course Tasting Menu in Seoul

Burger King’s Korean operator BKR is serving the Whopper as an eight-course tasting menu at Flameground, the brand’s first global flagship, in Seoul’s Seongsu district. The reservation-only course, called the Gastro, launched in September at a ten-seat bar behind the restaurant’s broiler-themed main hall and costs 89,000 won per person before drinks.

The meal lasts about 90 minutes and takes the burger apart one layer at a time, giving each ingredient its own Korean-influenced plate cooked over charcoal in an open kitchen. It opens with charred tomato, lime and kohlrabi kimchi, then moves to a ssam-style wrap with pork jowl and scallion kimchi, and a brisket patty with cheddar potato cream on a Whopper bun, served with fries and gochujang ketchup. Smoked braised beef arrives as a smoky bibimbap, sweet onion ice cream follows, and the last course brings charcoal to the table for toasting marshmallows. Bookings are taken through local platform CatchTable. Drink pairings cost 59,000 won with alcohol, including sparkling traditional Korean liquor, or 34,000 won without, with options such as orange juice with kimchi brine and a spiced house cola.

The flagship is part of a wider growth push. BKR, which also runs Tim Hortons in Korea, increased revenue by 12.5% to a record 892.2 billion won, with operating profit up 11.7% to 42.9 billion won, and is aiming for more than 1.1 trillion won in sales this year. Burger King has about 570 stores in the country, and Tim Hortons plans to grow from 33 Korean stores to around 150 by 2028. BKR said on Monday it will open Flamelab, a research and development centre in Seoul, later this month to feed customer feedback more directly into new products.

The company faces strong rivals. Euromonitor data shows Korea’s burger market grew from about 2.3 trillion won in 2015 to roughly 5 trillion won in 2025. McDonald’s Korea led with 1.43 trillion won in revenue, and Lotte GRS, which operates Lotteria, passed 1 trillion won for the first time since 2017. McDonald’s builds burgers around local produce, while Lotteria relies on tie-ups with creators and celebrity chefs.

BKR chief executive Lee Dong-hyeong calls Flameground “the starting point” for future Burger King brand experiences. Looking back to the chain’s arrival in Korea in 1984, he said he wants visitors to sense the brand’s “stubbornness and passion”. Korea has often served as a testing ground for the chain: it was the first market in Asia to get the Krispper line, and the Seoul-born Quattro Cheese Whopper has been exported to seven countries.
